This washstand has been fully restored inside and out. You can see the before picture of the washstand when I brought it home. The drawers slide smoothly, and there are brand-new antique brass casters on the bottom of the legs. The washstand was stained with walnut stain and finished with many coats of shellac. Last, I waxed the washstand with a paste beeswax. As you can see, the washstand is very beautiful.
Historical Note:
Washstands were essential pieces of furniture in bedrooms before the widespread adoption of indoor plumbing. They held a washbasin and pitcher for personal hygiene, showcasing the transition from purely functional to decorative furniture. The oak construction reflects the popular furniture trends of the late Victorian era.
